The European Fund for the Integration of Third-country nationals (EIF) was established by Council Decision 2007/435/EC of 25 June 2007 as part of the General programme 'Solidarity and Management of Migration Flows'.

Its main goal is to support the efforts made by the Member States to enable third country nationals from different economic, social, cultural, religious, linguistic and ethnic contexts to fulfil the requirements for residence and to facilitate their integration in European societies.

The Fund aims to contribute to the elaboration and setting up of national integration strategies for third country nationals in all aspects of society, namely by taking into account the principle according to which integration is a dynamic, two way process of mutual acceptance by all immigrants and residents of the Member States.

In Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Agency for Reception and Integration has been appointed as the authority responsible for implementing the EIF's work.

The OLAI handed in the multi-annual programme for 2007-2013 for Luxembourg to the European Commission, which approved it in October 2008. The programme sets out the actions for which Luxembourg wishes to co-finance projects for the year in question.
